U.S., Colombia struggle over drugs, dirty money

Article Abstract:

Critics believe that the liberalization of the Colombian economy in 1990 created money laundering opportunities which increased the power of the country's drug lords. However, it is argued that these problems are due to the government's inability to enforce its laws. This failure has allowed illegal capital to enter the economy and enabled drug lords to corrupt government officials.
