Uninformed consent

Article Abstract:

Washington University in St. Louis in summer 2003 sued one of its former researchers, prostate cancer specialist William Catalona, for ownership of tissue samples collected from thousands of his patients over years. To some of those patients, Catalona was the sole intended recipient of the specimen's, and the university's actions were not consistent with the research to which they had consented.

T cells for brain cells

Article Abstract:

Experimentation leading to a vaccine for Alzheimer's came to a stop when a few patients began experiencing brain inflammation as a result of immune system attacking the body. Researchers conclude that a mild autoimmune of T cells could protect the nervous system from neurodegenerative conditions.

The development of new embryonic cells by the reverse-engineering of human stem cells is discussed. Such induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are found to be very useful for the testing of various drugs.
