Varmus orders up review of the science of gene therapy

Article Abstract:

An ad hoc working group chaired by Inder Verma is evaluating the scientific merit of gene therapy at the request of NIH dir Harold Varmus. The group will provide advice on gene therapy protocols and the funding of gene therapy centers.

NIH escapes the ax - for now

Article Abstract:

The House appropriations subcommittee voted to increase the 1996 NIH budget by $642 mil, a 5.7% increase over 1995. The boost in funding for biomedical research is a departure from cuts in other federal funding for science.
