As John Gibbons prepares to relinquish his position as the nation's top science advisor, the White House is considering candidates for a job that is proving difficult to fill. Officials agree that the proper candidate should possess strong scientific credentials and have a good relationship with the president.

Clinton's R&D achievements tilt toward technology

Article Abstract:

Extended R&D tax cuts, decreased antitrust barriers to R&D ventures and reduced capital gains taxes for R&D investments are nine accomplishments claimed by the Clinton administration. Views of scientists on how well these and other goals have been met are presented.

Clinton pushes Internet initiative

Pres Clinton promised to fund a high-speed computer network for researchers. His proposal boosts a National Science Foundation project called the very high speed Backbone Network Service, which has a 622 megabits per second capacity.
