Waxwings: The winter wanderers

Article Abstract:

Waxwings are winter birds, which are beautiful in appearance with their sleek coats adorned with yellow -dipped tail and name-giving waxy red-tipped wing feathers. Both species of waxwings usually travel in flocks of their own kind, but they also mingle and unlike other birds like sparrow, its feature is to dine, not by pecking or gulping a jay, but by swallowing with deliberation one berry at a time.

Christmas bird counts are for the birds!

Article Abstract:

Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) were born out of competition, and in early 1800s the New Yorkers would shoot every living thing in sight on Christmas day and in the end would tally the kill. An American ornithologist protested the slaughter by creating an event in which participants tallied live birds and thus the CBCs have arisen.
