Worldwide effort underway to reduce SF6 greenhouse gas emissions

Article Abstract:

The EPA has started promoting voluntary pollution prevention arrangements in October 1998, to reduce sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) emissions. The program aims to decrease emissions from indsutries that are associated with the biggest emission sources of SF6, including magnesium casters, electric utilities and electronics manufacturers. Under the EPA effort, companies signing an EPA memorandum of understanding aimed at electric utilities, would vow to annually report their emissions of SF6, as well as pledge to create a corporate policy to handle the issue appropriately. The EPA plan is part of a worldwide program to reduce emissions of SF6, whose global warming potential is 23,900 times greater than that of CO2, and has an atmospheric lifetime of 3,200 years.
