'A medical perspective

Article Abstract:

The ethical issues encountered in treating abused aged by the health care professionals include confidentiality, caregiver burdens and insufficient family supports, dependency relationships and the longstanding patterns of family interaction. The codes of professional ethics identify the ethical concepts of beneficence, self-autonomy, paternalism, confidentiality, justice and respect for family rights. Case studies reveal the ethical dilemmas and the problems faced during the treatment of the abused aged in the family context.

Three case studies of elder mistreatment: identifying ethical issues

Article Abstract:

The ethical issues emerging from three case studies include the values of self determination, the societal commitment to protect its citizens, the family responsibility to protect its members, and the principle of doing no harm. The dilemmas caused by competing values pose an additional problem for the professionals dealing with elder mistreatment. Case studies, taken from a variety of real-life situations, illustrate the range and complexity of ethical issues faced by health care professionals.
