Advocates can adopt several creative strategies for fighting for the rights of vulnerable elderly nursing home residents. Successful criminal prosecution of a nursing home corporation has initiated various strategies, including a multi-disciplinary task force comprising several government departments and private personnel. Utilization of the services of geriatric nurse practitioners, volunteers and ombudsman, and education regarding different aspects of nursing home care can help in the fight for legal rights of nursing home residents.

Neglect and abuse associated with undernutrition in long-term care in North America: causes and solutions

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze causes and solutions to neglect and abuse related to undernutrition in long-term care of the aged in North America. Several protocols that promote a higher quality of life for residents, a reduction of costs for nursing home administrators and a decrease in care provider stress were discussed. The need for establishing an interdisciplinary to give quality nutritional care that includes assessment, food preparation and care planning was then addressed.
