Abuse of the elderly: services providing for victims in a Finnish nursing home - 1992-1993

Article Abstract:

Services provided in a Finnish nursing home for victims of elder abuse include telephone assistance, shelter and support group. The shelter is situated in the short-term care ward of a nursing home, and offers security, rest, consultation and a plan for future care. Telephone assistance gives the abused support, advice and a chance to talk of the emotions involved in the situations of domestic violence. The support group helps the victims to talk of their abuse. Most of the victims are women while the abusers are men. The passive coping technique is most commonly used by the elderly abused.

Elder abuse in the UK: a new jurisdiction?

Article Abstract:

UK legal responses can be improved to make them accessible to elderly people. An effective law can raise awareness and should receive predominance in the social policy agenda. The existing legal response to elder abuse consists of preventive measures, private law initiatives and state intervention. Preventive measures include legislations on provision of services and maintaining standards of the residential and nursing home accommodations. Private law offers corrective measures in the form of contract and tort. State intervention include the powers of removal.

For better or for worse: spouse abuse grown old

Article Abstract:

Couples over 60 years of age display less violent relationship than younger couples, but the risk factors triggering abusive relations are the same across ages. Perceived stress, poor marital adjustment, low income, poor health, and verbal aggression are major risk factors for physical violence in older couples. Use of reasoning tactics for conflict resolution is inversely related to couple violence for all age groups. Alcohol abuse as a risk factor, and use of verbal aggression tactics for resolving conflict is more frequent in younger couples.
