Depression and disability associated with impaired vision: the MoVIES Project

Article Abstract:

Depression may increase difficulties with activities of daily living (ADL) in elderly people with vision disorders. Researchers surveyed 872 people aged 68 years or older, and found that those with impaired vision were more than three times as likely to have five or more symptoms of depression than those with normal vision. Depression may aggravate functional deficits already present in vision-impaired elderly persons, and is associated with greater difficulties performing ADLs independent of vision status.

Moderate wine consumption is associated with decreased odds of developing age-related macular degeneration in NHANES-1

Article Abstract:

Moderate wine consumption appears to be associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This was the conclusion of a study of 3,072 adults 45 to 74 years old. Six percent had AMD and moderate alcohol consumption lowered the risk of AMD by about 15%. Wine alone lowered the risk as much as other types of liquor. This association remained after adjusting for other factors.
