Evaluation of Simulated Presence: a personalized approach to enhance well-being in persons with Alzheimer's disease

Article Abstract:

Alzheimer patients may benefit from Simulated Presence, an audio tape structured like a telephone call filled with treasured memories. Audio tapes were carried in hip pouches and could be played at will. Staff members rated the agitated and withdrawn behaviors of 54 patients in nursing homes as improved after the introduction of Simulated Presence. Since patients could not recall having heard the tape before, each listening period was a novel experience.

Health professionals' views on standards for decision-making capacity regarding refusal of medical treatment in mild Alzheimer's disease

While most supported the five basic elements presented in the survey, some did not. Implications of this response disparity are discussed.
