A census-based comparison of centenarians in New Zealand with those in the United States

Article Abstract:

There are fewer centenarians in New Zealand than in the US as a percentage of the population. In 1991, there were 246 female and 51 male centenarians in New Zealand, for a rate of 0.88 per 10,000 people. In the US in 1990, the rate was 1.5 per 10,000 people. Fifty-one percent of the male New Zealand centenarians lived at home compared to 29% of the women. Most had no formal education and many lived on less than NZ$10,000 per year.
