Home environmental hazards and the risk of fall injury events among community-dwelling older persons

Article Abstract:

Many falls among community-dwelling older persons cannot be attributed to commonly perceived hazards. Researchers analyzed the home environment of 270 people hospitalized for a fall injury and 691 control subjects. Almost all of the homes had commonly perceived hazards such as throw rugs, clutter, other trip hazards, and poor lighting. However, none of these hazards was associated with an increased risk of falling after controlling for other potentially confounding factors.

NSAIDS and renal function in older people

Article Abstract:

An excellent study by T.S. Field and others reports on the side effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Drugs can damage renal function, especially in older patients. The study also disagreed with previous studies about the relationship between NSAIDs and high blood pressure. The Field study concluded NSAID users and nonusers had virtually the same risk of high blood pressure. The study will aid those who treat elderly people.
