Executive cognitive abilities and functional status among community-dwelling older persons in the San Luis Valley Health and Aging Study

Article Abstract:

Impaired executive cognitive function in the elderly may be associated with greater difficulties performing activities of daily living. Executive cognitive functions are complex mental tasks, such as planning, problem solving, and anticipation. Researchers interviewed 1,158 people over 60 years of age, and performed several tests of their cognitive function. Lower levels of executive functioning predicted greater disability in the performance of independent daily activities.

Benzodiazepine exposure and functional status in older people

Article Abstract:

Benzodiazepines can affect an older person's functional abilities to the same extent that a medical condition can. This was the conclusion of a study of 4,192 HMO members 65 years old and older. Those who took benzodiazepines scored lower on tests of functional ability, as did those with medical conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, circulatory disorders, Parkinson's disease and stroke.
