The association of bone mineral density and depression in an older population

Article Abstract:

In a study of 1,566 patients aged 65 and older a significant correlation was found between depression and low bone density. The researchers speculate that a third factor, perhaps a steroid imbalance, may be causing both conditions.

Insulin-like growth factor-1 and interleukin 6 predict sarcopenia in very old community-living men and women: the Framingham Heart Study

Article Abstract:

Data from the Massachusetts Framingham Heart Study is used to investigate risk factors for sarcopenia, or age-related skeletal muscle mass loss, in elderly patients living in community settings. Findings show that sarcopenia is related to a decrease in anabolic stimuli in men, such as growth hormone, but is related to a rise in catabolic stimuli in women, such as interleukin 6.

Association of interleukin-6 and other biologic variables with depression in older people living in the community

Article Abstract:

Older depressed people may have increased levels of interleukin-6, the biological marker associated with inflammation responses as well as stress. Blood analysis of 1,686 community residents aged at least 70 years old showed a marked increase of interleukin-6 among those who rated themselves depressed. Researchers suggest that stress may produce excess interleukin-6 levels in the context of immunoendocrine dysregulation which turns into depression.
