Longitudinal study of changes in hip bone mineral density in Caucasian and African - American women

Article Abstract:

A longitudinal study involving 6,007 Caucasians with a mean average age of 73, and 482 African-American women with a mean average age of 75, on the difference in hip bone mineral density (BMD) between Caucasian and African-American women reflects that the average rate of hip BMD loss is approximately twice as great in Caucasian women and increases with age in both the groups. The hormonal and biochemical factors that contribute to ethnic differences and the increase in bone loss with advancing age need to be identified.

Moderate physical activity is associated with higher bone mineral density in postmenopausal women

Article Abstract:

Research shows that higher bone mineral density is linked to prolonged physical activity at the low-to-moderate level in postmenopausal women. Data were obtained from 23 endurance-trained athletes, 20 active nonathletic women, and 20 sedentary women.
