Aspiration pneumonia: dental and oral risk factors in an older veteran population

Article Abstract:

This article examines the contributions of dental and medical factors in the development of aspiration pneumonia in aged veterans. Findings indicate that an increased risk of aspiration pneumonia is associated with feeding assistance, tooth decay, diabetes, dental units, obstructive pulmonary disease, and the presence of specific bacteria in saliva.

Insulin resistance and executive dysfunction in older persons

Article Abstract:

The association between insulin resistance (IR) and executive dysfunction in a large, population-based study of older persons without diabetes mellitus (DM) or dementia is examined. However, it is concluded that IR is independently associated with frontal cortex function evidenced by poor Trail Making Test times in older persons without DM or dementia.
