Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse

Article Abstract:

Physicists are unable to diagnose geriatric syndromes and elder abuse in the course of customary care due to their failure to confront issues generic to family violence and causes specific to elder abuse. To overcome these deficiencies there is a requirement to provide a medical framework to the problem of elder abuse. A visible and credible scientific knowledge base should be established for clinicians. Elder abuse information needs to be integrated into medical education curricula and policy efforts need to address physicians' concerns.

Commentaries on 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse.'(enhancing physicians' detection and management of elder abuse)

Article Abstract:

The ageist views of physicians prevent them from addressing the problem of elder abuse. In 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse,' Mark Lachs argues that medicalizing elder abuse and presenting it as a geriatric syndrome will enhance physicians' involvement. Collaboration with experts from other disciplines will encourage physicians to provide effective services and initiate policy changes.

Commentaries on 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse.'(need to medicalize elder abuse)

Article Abstract:

In his article, 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse,' Mark Lachs argues that although primary care physicians detect elder abuse they fail to respond to it. However, he does not consider unawareness of the reporting system and mandatory reporting laws as the reasons for the lack of response.
