Predictors for functional declines among nondisabled older Japanese living in a community during a 3-year follow-up

Article Abstract:

A prospective cohort study has been carried out in a community-based environment to look at predictors for functional decline in basic activities of daily living (BADL) as well as predictors for decline in instrumental activities of daily living among nondisabled older Japanese people in the community over a 3-year period. Findings show having good intellectual activities, high-level hand-grip strength and good social roles are strongly associated with remaining independent in IADL for nondisabled Japanese older than 64. Subjects numbered 583 and were 65-89 at baseline and independent in BADL and IADL.
