Risk factors for falls and for serious injuries on falling among older Japanese women in Hawaii

Article Abstract:

Four subject characteristics were found to be positively associated with a fall in 705 older Japanese women in Hawaii in a study with the goal of comparing their risks to risks for a predominately white group. It appears that women at high risk of falling and serious fall injuries can be identified using a questionnaire and simple performance-based neuromuscular function tests. Risk factors for falls and for serious fall injuries were studied using a prospective cohort approach and women with mean age 74 +/-5 years. Japanese women living in the US or in Japan have about half the fall incidence reported for predominately white groups.

Sarcopenia: alternative definitions and associations with lower extremity function

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted, based on the data from the baseline examination of the Health Aging and Body Composition, to compare and examine two sarcopenia definitions, and also find the relationship between them and lower extremity function. The results suggest that fat mass should be considered in estimating prevalence of sarcopenia in women and in obese individuals.
