Prevalence and outcome of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus colonization in two nursing centers in Georgia

Article Abstract:

Researchers conducted a study the evaluate the cost-effectiveness and validity of aggressive diagnosing and eradication of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus (MRSA) aureus colonization. Participants included 87 residents of 2 nursing homes in Georgia. The presence or absence of MRSA was determined when the study began. Researchers found that the difference in the number of positive cultures for residents returning from the hospital compared to those coming from other settings was not significant. No deaths or hospitalizations were attributable to MRSA infection.

Pharmacologic treatment of hypersexuality and paraphilias in nursing home residents

Article Abstract:

Drug treatment options for hypersexuality in nursing home patients are discussed. This rare display of inappropriate sexual behavior among patients can be treated with antiandrogens, estrogens, gonadropin-releasing hormone analogues, or serotonergics. A throrough patient history should be taken to rule out medication effects. Serotonin uptake inhibitors should be a first option because of their safety profile.

Nursing home staff as research partners

Article Abstract:

Using nursing home staff in a research design has many advantages. Staff members are familiar with the mood swings in each patient and can detect minute changes. Imposing changes on nursing routines that are too time-consuming are not likely to succeed. Usual care versus research intervention should not imply that usual care is inferior.
