The patient as teacher: a tribute to Clark M. Clifford

Article Abstract:

Clark M. Clifford, a Washington lawyer, presidential advisor, and former Secretary of Defense, represents the patient as teacher, but many patients teach geriatricians. At the age of 88, bed-bound for about 9 months, Mr. Clifford asked for help so that he would be able to walk again because he had much to accomplish. Experiences are recounted, and the William Ernest Henley poem 'Invictus,' recited by Clifford at Grand Rounds at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, 4/1/98, follows the article.

Decision-making for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy among older adults in a community setting

Article Abstract:

Decision-making for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, artificial feeding by tube, in older adults in a community setting is discussed based on a study of 100 patients and their surrogate decision makers and physicians. Distress was experienced by everyone involved, in general. Physicians have well-defined triage patterns but assumptions that underlie them for this procedure are not supported extensively in the literature.

Usefulness of a linear analog scale questionnaire to measure health-related quality of life in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Article Abstract:

Findings suggest that the Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire, a linear analog scale, may be an effective tool for gauging disease-specific quality of life issues among older patients with chronic obstructive lung disease. Results from the QOL questionnaire are compared and contrasted with those obtained using the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire.
