The renal effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in older people: findings from the Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly

Article Abstract:

Older people who use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) frequently tend to have more dysfunctional kidneys than non-NSAID users. Researchers measured kidney dysfunction in the context of chronic NSAID use in 4,099 seniors above the age of 70. According to laboratory results, both blood urea nitrogen concentrations and serum creatinine concentrations were highest in chronic NSAID users tested at three years and six years.

Risk factors for adverse drug events among older adults in the ambulatory setting

Article Abstract:

The aim of the study is to gather information on patient-level factors associated with risk of adverse drug events (ADEs) that may allow focus of prevention efforts on patients at high risk. The findings suggest that it will be important to link computerized physician order entry systems to electronic files containing patient-specific data so that decision support systems can identify patinas at risk.
