Vitamin B12 deficiency in older people: improving diagnosis and preventing disability

Article Abstract:

Vitamin B12 deficiency may not be a reliable indicator of general health in older patients, as it is a common occurrence in the elderly. Determining a connection between health conditions and vitamin deficiency should be clarified before treatment is considered. Oral dosages of vitamin B12 are equally as effective as intramuscular injections, and may be preferable due to ease of administration.

The effect of Vitamin B12 deficiency on older veterans and its relationship to health

Article Abstract:

Vitamin B12 deficiency has a significant impact on the health of older citizens. In studies conducted on senior veterans, those who were shown to be Vitamin B12 deficient experienced more physical pains than those subjects with normal B12 levels, and demonstrated more cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment, however, is not directly correlated with general health.
