Why does insulin resistance develop during maturation?

Article Abstract:

Insulin responsiveness in four-month-old, mature rats is much lower than in five-week-old rats at varying concentrations of insulin perfused into hindlimbs. The difference in skeletal muscle glucose uptake was most noticeable at highest concentrations. Insulin receptor binding, receptor-associated tyrosine kinase activity and autophosphorylation were measured as possible explanations for lowered glucose intake, but did not differ between young and mature rats. GLUT-4 glucose transporter content was high in the mature rats but possibly not in mature rats.

Effect of aging on changes in plasma potassium during exercise

Article Abstract:

The elderly have a lower ability to reabsorb plasma potassium into muscles, which may have detrimental effects during prolonged exercise. The rate of increase and maximum concentration of plasma potassium (K+) for young men, non-athletic older men and a group of elderly master athletes was measured while subjects exercised to exhaustion on stationary bicycles. Although the older men showed faster rates of K+ increase, their peak concentrations did not rise as high as that of the younger subjects, because the elder group exercised for a shorter time.

Hospice admission practices: where does hospice fit in the continuum of care?

Article Abstract:

Hospices offer multidisciplinary, holistic care in a variety of settings. An evaluation of selected hospice admission practices that could represent barriers to hospice use and the association between these practices and organizational characteristics is presented.
