A switch in time

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the manner in which a standardized time system was implemented in the US are examined. Topics include the importance of time schedules for railroads in the 19th century, technological developments which allowed a standardized time system, and congressional legislation regarding a standardized time system.

The voyage of the "coolie" ship Kate Hooper: October 3, 1857-March 26, 1858

Article Abstract:

Over 600 indentured Chinese laborers boarded the US merchant ship Kate Hooper in Hong Kong on Oct 3, 1857, believing they were to disembark in San Francisco, CA, but were taken to Cuba. The crew was promised extra wages but not paid, and the suit they brought stopped US vessels from transporting such laborers.

The fast mail: A history of the US Railway Mail Service

Article Abstract:

The Railway Mail Service set the standards for speed, dependability and response to the mission of moving and distributing the nation's mail for more than 140 years between 1832 and 1977. The Railway Mail service expanded from 8 to 11 divisions between February 4, 1876 and March 19 1889.
