America's religious leaders endorse landmark declaration on religion and sexuality

Article Abstract:

The Religious Declaration on Sexual Morality, Justice, and Healing, a progressive statement indicating that sexuality is one of God's most significant gifts, has gained the support of more than 1,000 religious leaders in the US. The statement says that faith communities must call for sexual and spiritual wholeness in society and that culture requires a sexuality ethic based on personal relationships and social justice. It also calls for full inclusion of women and sexual minorities in congregational life and for support for people who challenge sexual oppression and who seek justice within their congregations and denominations.

A theology of sexual pleasure

Article Abstract:

God created humans as sexual beings, however, Christianity teaches that sexuality is not a goal in itself but should be part of a wholeness that interrelates it with love and spirituality. People are not automatically sinful or unspiritual due to their sexuality as erroneous Biblical interpretations and certain cultural orientations assume. Since people are sexual beings, they have the right to express their sexuality and experience sexual pleasure. Sexuality is interrelated with spirituality and is intended to enhance relationships and express love.
