Civilizationalism

Article Abstract:

Civilizationalism is one of the most powerfully dangerous articulations emerging in the historical scene, the ultimate level of expression of ethnic nationalism. One of the most influential academic essays of the 1990s is Samuel Huntington's 'The Clash of Civilization', which proposes that the US should exploit conflicts so as to maintain world hegemony, which will no doubt generate global racism, nationalism and regionalism, as well as a reactionary form of civilizationalism.

Ethnicity, sexuality and globalization

Article Abstract:

Ethnicity and sexuality blend together to form sexualized perimeters around ethnic, racial and national spaces, and these sexual boundaries mark the edges of the race, the ethnic group, and the nation. The sexual aspects of race, ethnicity and nationalism are constantly shaped and reshaped by the globalization process, and tensions between local and global rules and processes governing ethnicity and sexuality heighten as the speed of globalization increases.

Putting mourning to work: Making sense of 9/11

Article Abstract:

The mourning adopted by both the government and mainstream media after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, was reined to the cause of making sense of what happened. The perverse transformation of grief into patriotic nationalism, through altered versions of Norman Rockwell's paintings and souvenirs available at Ground Zero, enabled a perpetual rationale and motive force for war.
