Empire of nostalgia: rethinking 'internationalization' in Japan today

Article Abstract:

In Japan at the end of the twentieth century, 'internationalization' and 'native place' are perhaps the two most compelling and ubiquitous terms in use, yet they would appear to refer to two different paths. Culture, however, is always changing. Together the terms indicate the ambiguity of national identity and the tension between national identity and cultural identity. Internationalization and Japanese culture, which is really many cultures, coexist nicely. Internationalization is a product of the formation of a Japanese national cultural identity and central to its ongoing formation.

Recognition and redistribution: Rethinking culture and the economic

Article Abstract:

The ways in which the theoretical frameworks of Iris Marion Young and Judith Butler are potentially problematic or do not go far enough in theoretizing the complex interconnections among politics, economics and culture is discussed. It is felt that social relationships need to be disaggregated further into more than just two categories and that the economic and the cultural should be analyzed as always complexly over determining each other.

Recognition or redistribution?: changing perspectives on the moral order of society

Article Abstract:

This article examines the changing political culture of the US, focusing on how society has moved away from the idea that a redistribution of wealth leads to social justice, to the idea that each individual deserves dignity and respect. The author examines how the philosophical concepts of 'respect' and 'self-realization' relate to the moral order of society.
