Regional concentration, trade, and welfare

Article Abstract:

Free trade could give rise to a geographic concentration of economic activities within single countries which may contribute to the deterioration of welfare in these regions. Such an adverse effect on welfare can happen even if sectors not directly linked with free trade will experience expansion in response to a need for international specialization. This is so because free trade often prompts labor migration to one region and a subsequent change in relative factor supplies within the region, putting local services at a disadvantage.

Regional growth in postwar Japan

Article Abstract:

A study shows that the Tokyo monopolar system was induced by two changes including a shift from light to heavy industries and the shift from heavy towards high-tech and service industries in Japan. Developments in the country's transportation and telecommunication systems also led to the dispersion of mass-production operations to foreign and nonmetropolitan areas, while knowledge-intensive operations accumulate in Japan's primary areas.
