Endogenous ideology formation and economic policy in former colonies

Article Abstract:

A theory of endogenous ideology formation is described to examine for differences in state economic intervention levels and economic policy formation in a sample of former colonies. Analysis of the theory reveals the presence of an empirical relationship between state economic intervention and colonialism. However, no significant relationship is found between government intervention and structural variables included in economic policy formation such as land area, total and per capita gross domestic product and population.

Rent seeking and international commodity agreements: the case of coffee

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that export quotas of the International Coffee Agreement (ICA) which create quota rents in coffee-exporting countries lead to directly unproductive behavior is modeled. This can lead to economic waste and negatively affect income distribution. The model developed demonstrates that rent-seeking losses can overshadow gains incurred from higher prices due to the ICA.
