Freud and Dora: repressing an oppressed identity

Article Abstract:

Sigmund Freud's case history of 'Dora' is one of the most studied in the history of psychoanalysis. 'Dora' was Freud's name for the daughter of a Viennese industrialist brought to him for treatment on the grounds that she was suffering from hysteria. Dora told Freud of sexual advances made to her by a business partner of her father, but Freud interpreted her resistance to imply repressed desire for the man. Feminist re-evaluations of Freud's work on the case of Dora are analyzed.

Lacan's misuse of psychology: Evidence, rhetoric and the mirror stage

Article Abstract:

The relations between Lacan's psychoanalytic theory and more conventional psychological ideas are critically examined, concentrating on his notions of 'mirror stage'. Lacan cited the work of orthodox psychologists such as Wolfgang Kohler, James Mark Baldwin, and Charlotte Buhler as providing evidential basis for his ideas about the mirror stage.

Humour and embarrassment: limits of 'nice-guy' theories of social life

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern how humor and embarrassment are linked in social life. The author argues against a previous theory that others empathize with embarrassment, and instead suggests that laughter and humor are targeted at the embarrassed individual.
