From Pearl Harbor to Elvis: Images that endure

Article Abstract:

A reference team of NARA's Presidential libraries handles requests from patrons to identify popular photographs that include the photograph of former US President Richard M. Nixon and Elvis Presley along with seven images of World War II. In order to be popular, a photograph needs to convey something crucial and essential, needs to encapsulate a pivotal event and capture a defining mood.

Women soldiers in the civil war: file in National Archives uncovers unknown story

Article Abstract:

DeAnne Blanton, who along with Lauren M. Cook authored the book, 'They Fought Like Demons: Women Soldiers in the American Civil War' discuses her new book about the women who wore men's blue and gray army uniform. The book relates the previously untold story of women who disguised themselves as men and enlisted in the armies of the Union and the Confederacy.
