Gay and lesbian seniors: Unique challenges of coming out in later life

Article Abstract:

Senior Action in a Gay Environment (SAGE) has helped elder gays and lesbians by acting as a substitute relative, as a senior center, a place to form new relationships and as a therapy group. Some gay and lesbian seniors approaching SAGE are seeking out a gay-identified organization for the first time, and many members have kept their gay identity to themselves. Gay and lesbian seniors face the same struggles associated with ageing as everyone else, but may feel isolated due to years of internalized homophobia.

Important points to make to students when discussing sexual orientation

Several points should be emphasized when discussing sexual orientation with students. Some of these points include the possibility of having homosexual relationships while remaining heterosexual at heart, the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youths attempt to change sexual orientation by dating or marrying a person of the opposite sex and clarification of the stereotype that all gays are effeminate while lesbians are masculine.
