Hacking's reconciliation: putting the biological and sociological together in the explanation of mental illness

The integration of biological and sociological approaches to mental illness is discussed, with a focus on the views of Ian Hacking. Topics include social construction versus the medical model, the looping effect of classification of people, transient mental illnesses, stable disorders, Hacking's semantic approach to reconciliation between constructionist and biological perspectives, and the social mind/brain.

Erotetic contextualism, data-generating procedures, and sociological explanations of social mobility

Article Abstract:

The ability of the erotetic model of explanation to discriminate significant from spurious explanation is criticized. Data-generating procedures of measuring occupational status and social mobility affect different aspects of one explanation, and these findings are used to meet objections to the erotetic model.
