Hirschman's Taxonomy of Industries: Some Hypotheses and Evidence

Article Abstract:

Economists focus hard on the capital intensity impact of technology, especially when advancing a neoclassical theory of international trade. The alternative notions of taxonomy advanced by Hirschman are reviewed. Hirschman categorized industries in process centered industries (PSI) and product centered industries (PTI) in accordance with the type of technical method involved. PSI Technology is efficiency promoting. PTI technology involves higher levels of human control, and necessitates sound managerial decisions and worker performance levels. Tables based on data from Pakistan show statistical differences for productivity in PSI and PTI industries. Other tables show compound growth rates for Pakistan's productivity and ratio of value added per employee statistics. Ninety percent of the studied PTI showed positive growth rates for two different periods.
