Interindustry wage differentials in Brazil

Article Abstract:

Cross-sectional data on workers in the manufacturing industries of Sao Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed to understand the phenomenon of interindustry wage differentials among workers with equal skills. The results show that interindustry wage differentials in the Brazilian economy are due to noncompetitive factors. The differentials are related to the particular technology employed in the industries and also to the effort to prevent turnover, monitoring and shirking problems.

Productivity Growth in Indonesia: The Role of Regional Characteristics and Direct Foreign Investment(*)

Article Abstract:

Geographic factors do not influence Indonesia's overall industrial productivity through direct foreign investment. While regional proximity allows domestic firms to participate in spillovers from each other's investment gains, no evidence supports the theory that domestic firms can benefit in this manner from their proximity to foreign firms. Additionally, a diversified industry structure was found to be effective in increasing productivity growth.
