On the aggregation of individual withdrawal behaviors into larger multi-item constructs

Article Abstract:

The integration of multi-item behaviors into a broader framework for the improvement of work attitude-work behavior proves to be an interesting subject. However, it is advisable to concentrate on physical withdrawal behaviors to help identify these multi-item constructs from other kinds of deviance behavior constructs. A work withdrawal construct may be composed of about five self-report behaviors, including leaving early without permission, avoidable absence, job transfer request and lateness.

Aggregation or aggravation? The relative merits of a broad withdrawal construct

Article Abstract:

The attempt to develop broad withdrawal constructs in organizational behavior is increasing primarily because of the implicit recognition that pertaining constraints frequently limit a particular organizational behavior's expression. Broad withdrawal constructs such as job dissatisfaction, can cut across work contexts and it is not premature. Moreover, there is a meta-analytic evidence that can justify a construct that includes behaviors, expectations, feelings and intentions.

The importance of individuals' repertoires of behaviors: the scientific appropriateness of studying multiple behaviors and general attitudes

Article Abstract:

Important practical and scientific advantages can be produced by concentrating on general withdrawal constructs rather than on individual behaviors. Studying these general withdrawal constructs can also provide a ground for generalizations across situations, time and population. Moreover, some form of aggregation of certain individual behaviors such as lateness absence and unfavorable job behavior can be appealing in the study of organizational withdrawal.
