Patterns of internationalisation of corporate technology: location vs. home country advantages

Article Abstract:

Large firms usually bring technologies from their fields of expertise to their branches abroad. As such, a major concern among these multinational firms is how to adapt or refine their products to suit the foreign market. One strategy used to resolve this problem is to study the technologies developed by leading firms in industrialized countries that are related to their core business. However, this type of activity is mostly observed among the foreign units of the company and is rarely initiated by home-based firms despite their awareness of the weaknesses of their local technologies.

New perspectives on the innovation strategies of multinational enterprises: lessons for technology policy in Europe

Article Abstract:

A study investigated the innovation and R&D strategies of large, multinational, technology-intensive firms, changes in these strategies and the internationalization of research and technology in relation to significant issues and options for the shaping of European technology policy. The analysis used an empirical sample of 21 multinational firms, most of which deal with electronics/information technology, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and machinery/advanced engineering.

Technological globalisation and innovative centres: the role of corporate technological leadership and locational hierarchy

Article Abstract:

Analysis of US patents issued to industrial research sponsored by European companies reveals the tendency of multinational corporations to develop technologies tailored to their business activities in foreign countries. However, multinational firms that do not have a dominant position in their specific industries at home usually resort to direct imitation and transplantation of their home-based technologies to their foreign destination.
