Saga of Iraq GI Sgt. Matt Maupin

Article Abstract:

Army Sgt. Keith "Matt" Maupin is the only one unaccounted for in the Iraq war and because of the peculiar military situation there he is listed as missing and captured. The US has dedicated a large force, ample time and trained people for the search and rescue and will continue to do so but in the meanwhile his parents are maintaining a Yellow Ribbon Support Center in Batavia to send care packages to GIs in Iraq and for keeping the memory of Maupin's capture alive.

Society & the soldier

Article Abstract:

The way a society receives and treats its citizens in uniform during and after a war says a lot about its own values. America is divided between the vast majority who do not serve in the military and the tiny minority who do, the citizens who love the uniform in a detached sort of way with no direct links, the unwilling ones who have to be dragged into the military with a full-fledged draft and all this does not bode well for national cohesiveness.
