Sociality with objects: social relations in postsocial knowledge societies

Article Abstract:

In postsocial knowledge cultures, the rise of modern science has brought a type of object-relationship that is different from the major kinds of object-relations that have existed in sociology, those linked to commodities and to instruments. The new type relates to expert cultures, to objects of knowledge. It could be extended to human relationships to nature or to physical activities or something else. With expert cultures the sociality with objects tends to be over a long period, consuming and in some way reciprocal. Objects become sources of the self and of social integration.

The market

Article Abstract:

Markets awakened great interest in the later years of the 20th century, perhaps in response to the rise of financial markets and the increased 'marketization' of public services, social security and other welfare provisions that were previously the domain of nation-state policies and regulations. A discussion on the types of markets, their cultural dimensions and how they can be understood analytically is presented.

Sex and sociality: comparative ethnographies of sexual objectification

Article Abstract:

The view of sexuality as socially constructed is based on a conception of sexuality as a readily defined and clearly objectified domain, regarded as apart from everyday life, love and sociality. Comparative analysis of sexuality among the Huaorani, Trinidadians, and 'sexpics traders' on the Internet suggests a different approach, pointing to a range in degree from minimal to maximal objectification of sexuality.
