Technological prospects toward the 21st century: the case of Toshiba Corporation

Article Abstract:

Technological development trends in Japan for the 21st century are discussed. R&D is expected to become an integral part of corporate strategy, as technological innovations fuel the growth of new markets. The integration of technologies such as multimedia, and the growing number of software engineers will also influence future technological development initiatives. Toshiba Corp.'s R&D strategies are presented.

The learning curves underlying convergence

Article Abstract:

Forecasting convergence and information technology is still not possible as the major performance parameters are too few to determine the latter parts of the learning curve. Technology is still at the exponential growth phase but it has been suggested that computer and related technologies continue to sustain high growth rates because of their being mutually supportive of emerging technologies.

Can Japan succeed in "chigyo-ka" (intelprise-formation)

Article Abstract:

Japan lags behind the US in its application of information technology. It is shown that the Japanese have very little understanding of the information revolution process which involves both a technological and social revolution. The Japanese society has become a 'network-oriented society' wherein intelprise and intelplace are the bases of social relations since the Middle Ages.
