The Macroeconomic Versus the Microeconomic Approach to Development: The Futility of Development Efforts as a Function of Institutional Inertia

Article Abstract:

The merger point for microeconomic and macroeconomic methods occurs when a delivery system is as responsive to clients as to providers. Arguments for integrated approaches demand a holistic step which is based on the vertical integration into one delivery system of social services. Case studies of developmental projects in various nations are reviewed. Community support and participation are primary ingredients in the success of any effort to better the health, education and welfare of the rural poor. Replicable case studies on this topic proved elusive in China for P.H. Combs and the International Council for Educational Development.

Institutional environment, ideological commitment, and farmers' time allocation: the case of Israeli Moshavim

Article Abstract:

Collective farming policy in Israel has been modified to include off-farm employment. Cooperative villages, or Moshavim, that have adopted time allocation for off-farm work have established a balance between the reduction of farm labor and the income earned by outside employment. This balance is constructed so it does not conflict with ideological commitment.
