The brewing of Islamist modernity: tea gardens and public space in Istanbul

Article Abstract:

This article examines the polemics of the valuation of Islamist social movements, and the route of Islamic cultures toward modernity. The author focuses on the Turkish Islamist party Refah's transformation of public space since winning the Greater Istanbul Municipality in 1994, and their construction of Islamist tea gardens and restaurants.

Bakhtin at the seaside: Utopia, modernity and the carnivalesque

Article Abstract:

Bakhtinian interpretation of the English seaside resort is critically examined. These suggest that resorts developed in England as sites of cultural resistance to the pressures of modernity, marginal spaces in which the utopian dynamics of traditional recreational practices were kept alive.

Modernity, secularism and Islam: The case of Turkey

It is shown that the process of modernization and democratization in Turkey had faced the problem of establishing a delicate balance between politics and religion and more secularism was used by the state elite to control religion.
