The effects of political violence: a structural equation model of the rise of Italian Fascism (1919-1922)

Article Abstract:

Two models, namely the 'social base' model and the model that includes political violence, for analyzing the rise of Fascism in Italy are evaluated using a structural equation technique. A comparative analysis of the Fascists' struggle against the Socialists in 69 Italian provinces examines the relationships among the following variables: the Socialists' strength, the level of political participation, the frequency of Fascist violence, the composition of wage workers and the Fascists' political takeover in the province.
