Article Abstract:

A short history of the 14 international conferences on the social sciences and medicine from 1968-96 is presented. These conferences were organized to enable social and medical scientists to discuss common problems through an informal exchange of ideas, opinions, attitudes and experience with the aim of promoting respect for differing views. Except for the conference held in Kenya, Nairobi, in 1977, all meetings were held in Europe and participated in by both invited and uninvited attendees from different countries. The last conference in Sep 1996 includes 239 participants from 52 countries.
