The mobile phone and the dynamic between private and public communication: Results of an international exploratory study

Article Abstract:

An interview-based study was conducted to trace cultural differences and similarities in the use of mobile phones in various European countries and obtain early insight into the relationship between private and public communication. Data clearly reveal that the mobile phone redefines the sense of personal and public space, whilst also reflecting what might perhaps be more deeply rooted national cultural and social behaviors.

Is the cell phone undermining the social order? Understanding mobile technology from a sociological perspective

Article Abstract:

The regressive and subversive impact of mobile telephones is examined from a sociological perspective. It is argued that the mobile phone is undermining the social order by putting communicative power into the hands of the individual, and as a consequence of its mobility, removes communications across society from stable and formal institutionalized channels into a de-centralized, individual network.
