The modern university: contributor to industrial innovation and recipient of industrial R&D support

Article Abstract:

The contributions of research and development partnerships between industry and universities on the level of technological innovation was examined via a survey of selected chemical, information processing, petroleum, semiconductor and pharmaceutical companies in the US. The results, which showed that proximity to academic research institutions play a crucial role in many firms' adoption of new technology, underscored the role of MIT, Stanford, Harvard and other universities as new technology generators.

Academic research and industrial innovation: a further note

Article Abstract:

The conservative assumption made in an earlier paper that the yearly social benefits from an innovation equal their average yearly level in the first four years following its commercialization is discarded. This statement assumes that the social rate of return from investments in research and development, plant and equipment and start-up costs would average over 50% yearly. A new assumption that puts the social rate of return from such investments at an average of about 40% is proposed.
