Values-based sexuality education: confronting extremists to get the message across

Article Abstract:

Sex educators are being blamed for the seeming deterioration of teenagers'moral values. They face opposition from extremists whose arguments focus on the failure of education to impart pertinent information about values-based sexuality as reflected from increasing statistics on teenage pregnancies and prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases. Educators need to redefine the goals of sex education and examine the factors that hinder its realization. They should also make a firm stand against resistance to comprehensive sex education since it may be the solution to problems about sexual education.

Young people in Bogota, Colombia develop their own strategies to prevent risky sexual behavior

Article Abstract:

The young people of Bogota, Colombia, with help from Colombian Human and Social Development Foundation, have developed a peer strategy to prevent risky sexual behavior. The peer approach encourages youth to question, analyze, and understand their sexuality. The strategy helps adolescents and facilitators to understand the broader issues of sexuality. It enables them to recognize the discrepancies in their perception regarding sexuality. The community's help in legitimizing the work has helped in the empowerment of youth.
