Where there is no village: teaching about sexuality in crisis situations

Article Abstract:

Refugee camp youth's emotional, academic, cultural, reproductive, sexual health, and sex education needs are largely neglected such that programs are needed to establish government support in meeting such needs. The widespread sexual exploitation of refugee youth leads to early pregnancy, human immunodeficiency viruses, sexually transmitted disease and other problems without adequate education, health services and resources. Advocacy groups, organizational cooperation, recreational and social programs, and youth involvement must be implemented to help satisfy refugee youth needs.

Sexuality education: it can reduce unprotected intercourse

Article Abstract:

An examination of the changes brought about by various sexuality education programs upon the values and attitudes of adolescents reveal that despite their positive results, more effective programs are needed.Evaluations show that the programs' visible behavioral impact lies in the reduction of unprotected sexual intercourse in adolescents. However, despite the encouraging findings, comprehensive sexuality educators must avoid complacency. A broadscale replication of the programs must be implemented comprehensively with focus on practical skills.

Preventing adolescent pregnancy: in hot pursuit

Article Abstract:

The successes of the Children's Aid Society, a Harlem-based organization that tries to prevent teenage pregnancy and help urban kids, are discussed. The program dealt mainly with low-income, single-parent high school students in an urban area. The program offered job awareness, sex education, and medical and health services programs, as well as mental health services and programs to help kids develop self-esteem. Participants eventually achieved lower rates of alcohol use and pregnancy than their non-palpitating peers.
